A RAINFOREST IN THE DESERT
These days, Albuquerque is a fertile ecosystem teeming with creative students, researchers, visionaries and entrepreneurs. It’s a place where, when it rains, it rains ideas. Thanks to two distinctly different but connected programs that are helping us transform Albuquerque into a destination for dreamers. A place where thinkers and doers can think and do and thrive.
Our campus-based program that brings together students from different places, cultures and disciplines to work alongside world-class faculty. To do research, solve real problems, and create new knowledge through disruptive, interdisciplinary courses and hands-on experiences.
This initiative brings pioneering students and local entrepreneurs together. It provides them with a place in the heart of the city where they can connect, collaborate and do real research. And with the help of the University and our local community and government partners, they can find ways to commercialize their great thinking, start startups and create jobs in the region.

His trajectory at UNM followed a path from research on computer models of people with Alzheimers, to inventing products for people using adaptive biomedical design. He knows that many things most of us take for granted can be real barriers for people with unique needs. His latest research project is the development of the Shower Chaise™, a module-based device that will improve the hygiene experience for people with mobility needs.
BLA Liberal Arts ‘21
Kyle and Innovation Academy go way back. He is a three-time winner of its pitch contest. Classic overachiever.
He realized that there was a better way to help frenzied new college students manage their schedules. So, in his sophomore year, Kyle started a software company and created an iTunes app called “Pencil-In.” Just scan hardcopy dates and times and business cards into your Apple device, and it automatically generates editable Apple Calendar events and Contacts. He’s proving that possible is a state of mind.
